How to Establish a Dog Park

  • Define a space
  • Ascertain who owns the space
  • Approach the owner(s) as to the feasibility of fencing in acreage for an off-leash park
    • at least one acre will be needed
    • stay away from grass
    • parking is necessary
    • water access is necessary for a water fountain
  • Engage in a petition drive, if necessary
  • Have community meetings to acquire a positive public consensus from the community and surrounding neighbors (if any)
  • Acquire an architect to design the off-leash area
  • Obtain costs of developing the project
  • Prepare a proposal to present to the correct parties
  • Acquire funds through City or private means to build the park
  • Organize a Dog Park Council to help monitor, maintain and advise patrons on the site specific rules and regulations you have adopted.
  • Have monthly meetings with your City officials on management of your off-leash area.
  • Organize ongoing monthly fundraising campaigns to finance new projects for the park
